1. In my book right now, Holden is taking his little sister Phoebe the carousel, which they both used to love when they were little kids. Holden is really looking for something to enjoy, and I think that this will be just what he wants, because throughout the whole beginning of the book he is criticizing everything and everyone that is introduced into the book. But he does love his sister, and seeing her have so much, in a place where he had fun as a child, might finally make him happy. Even though he would think that the whole situation was "corny", I think he would still love it.
2. Overall, I somewhat enjoy this book. Though the writing is beautiful and very descriptive, I just don't really like the way that Holden thinks. He's very negative all the time and calling things "corny" or "phony". I wish that Salinger didn't do this because you can never draw your own conclusion about what you think about a person. But I do see where he is coming from, how we can see everything from Holden's point of view, though I would enjoy forming my own opinion.
3. A theme I have noticed in this book so far is loneliness. I see loneliness in that, Holden has deprived himself from enjoying anything. He sees the flaws in people and just can't get over those flaws and just drives him crazy and he thinks that people can't change. Also he classifies activities in "phony" or "corny", so most things that people do his age, like go to football games, annoy him.
4. My favorite character in this book so far is Phoebe Caulfield, Holden's sister. If Holden is right, she is very smart. I always like the people in books that are described as smart, because usually the author is hinting that this person is wise or selfless, and not just smart. This case is no exception, and when Holden runs out of money, Phoebe insists he have her Christmas money.
5. My least favorite character in this book is Holden Caulfield, the main character. I don't like him because he is so negative all the time and just can't enjoy anything. I do feel bad for him somewhat, but like when he was on the date with Sally, he just couldn't get over how annoyed he was with the play, and how annoyed he was with her, which eventually lead to him confronting her about her flaws.
6. I predict that Holden will decide to go back to school, and try to go to college. I say this because seeing his sister enjoy something so silly made him realize that he can't going through life looking for the flaws in everyone and everything, and just has to enjoy what he's doing.
