The Compound
S.A. Boden
Realistic Fiction
Just Right
Pg. 179
1. Right now in the story, Eli just confessed to the rest of his family that he was the reason that his twin brother was not in the compound with the rest of them. On the day before they went into the compound, Eddy and Eli's birthday, their dad told them that one of them will get to fly in a two-seater airplane. Eli was spoiled and he wanted to go first. Eddy had started to have an allergy attack, and their grandma went to the cabin to get Eddy's medicine, which happened to be far away. Eli told Eddy that there was a surprise back at the cabin, so he he could be the only one riding the plane in the morning. Eddy snuck out and hid in the car so Grandma and Eddy were left behind when they went into the compound.
2. So far, this book is great. I think the plot could be little more interesting though. It is kind of old, because they are in one place the entire book, but I like how when they are in the compound, new challenges come up, like the shortage of meat, or bad light bulbs that won't help the plants grow.
3. The theme I see in this book is betrayal because during the beginning of the book, you start to realize that their father is hiding something from them. Later on in the book, you learn the truth behind the compound, and that they were all basically being held prisoner by their own father.
4. My favorite character is Eddy, even though I haven't really seen him at all, but from what I hear, he was a nice, caring boy who likes surprises, (one reason he went into the car to go back to the cabin). I can relate to him because I also like surprises. He was the nice twin, and Eli is the evil twin.
5. My least favorite character is Eli, even though he is the main character. Eli is the evil twin. He is mean, intimidating, has a bad temper, and is strong, so he is like a bully. Once during their birthday, he switched the names of all the birthday gifts of his and Eddy's, so he would get Eddy's gifts, and Eddy would get Eli's. He knew that the other kids liked Eddy better, so he would get the better presents. Eli was spoiled, and he wanted the cool toys.
6. I think that they will eventually get out of the compound and see Eddy and their Grandma.
