JANE EYRE

Julia Pearson
Jane Eyre
Charlotte Bronte
Fiction/Historical
Challenge
pg. 129

1. In Jane Eyre, the main character, Jane, is living in Thornfeild, a mansion, and she is a governess to a little french girl named Adele. Jane had a troubled childhood where she tells of living with her abusive aunt and cousins(she is an orphan) to living at an orphanage school. There she has a rough start, for the parson who funds the orphanage thinks she is a liar and therefore shuns her. After she meets her friend Helen and the nice teacher/headmistress Miss. temple, she finds the courage to do well. She remains at the school for eight years. Then she attains the governess job. She enjoys it, but does not seem satisfied. Right now, she has met the owner of Thornfeild, a Mr. Rochester, who is very peculiar and abrupt in manner.
2. I think the book is good. It is kind of tedious at points because the book was written in the 1800s and the grammar and vocabulary is different than now. I do enjoy the story line and the writing style is good.I find it a bit dull, but it is not dull enough to put it down.
3. There could be many themes in this book, but for what I am reading right now, I think the theme should be satisfaction. This is because Jane does not yet know what she really wants to do with her life. She enjoys being a governess, but it is routine to her and dull at times. Jane is not satisfied, and sometimes she will go into the attic of Thornfeild and dream about what she could do eventually.
4. My favorite character is Helen. Helen was always getting reprimanded by teachers for unjust reasons, but she accepted her punishments and knew she was above them. She was always reading, and she was very smart. Miss. Temple loved her, and sometimes had her for tea. there, Helen would be happy and 'come alive' as Jane roughly said- she would talk to Miss. Temple of classics and other literature. Her eyes would light up and her cheeks would glow and Jane thought she was another person.
5. My least favorite character would be Mr.Brocklehurst. This is because he is a hypocrite and also ignorant. He is supposed to be funding the school, but he spends hardly any money at all, so the children half starve and have to make there own clothes. Many die. He believes that the orphans should learn to be humble, so he has them wearing ugly clothes and those with pretty hair have to cut it off. Meanwhile his wife and children come in with elaborately curled hair and expensive, excessive clothes.
6. I predict that Jane will stay at Thornfeild a while longer. Then she will leave and go on to do big things like she wanted, but first she will get to know Mr. Rochester a little better.
