1. Right now, the main character Elizabeth Cairns just found out that her husband, Snowden Cairns, murdered her father, and her former husband in order to attain her fortune. After asking her younger sister Diana Holland to go and find a friend named Teddy Cutting, she was once again drugged by Snowden to keep her from talking about what happened. When Teddy showed up, Snowden kept her from talking, in order to keep the secret. Also, Henry Schoonmaker's father died right before he was going to run away with Diana. Finally, Carolina Broad is about to marry Leland Brouchard, and some of her old secrets are coming back to haunt her. What will happen next in this tangled love story?
2. So far in the book, I really enjoy reading it. I like the suspenseful, edge-of-your-chair writing style, which has a new twist and turn on every page. Also, I enjoy the way in which the characters are caught up in both the chains of expectations, and the tangled love triangles. For example, how Henry is willing to run away to paris with Diana and leave his wife, Penelope. Also, in the way that Elizabeth wanted to wait for Teddy Cutting to come home to marry him, but was forced to marry Snowden instead.
3. A theme I see in this book is the theme of forbidden love. This theme is shown when Carolina marries Leland, because she is a former maid who normally would not be able to rise above her status, or especially marry a rich man, like Leland is. Also, when Diana falls in love with Henry, who is her sister's ex fiance, and who is married to Penelope Hayes, she risks all that she has for love. Finally, when Elizabeth loves Teddy Cutting, she calls out for help from him, not anyone else, which shows that she loves him.
4. My favorite character is Carolina Broad, a former maid, who works hard to overcome her obstacles. She is a optimistic, and outgoing person. She is hopelessly in love with her fiance, and even though she lies almost pathologically to cover up her roots, she still tries not to deceive her love. Also, she cares for her sister, who is still a maid, which shows that she won't forget her.
5. My least favorite character is Penelope Schoonmaker, because she is a manipulative girl who has no concern for other's feelings or opinions. She takes advantage of whoever surrounds her, and disregards the tragedies surrounding her. This is shown when she didn't care that her father-in-law had just died, all that she cares about is that Henry might divorce her now that he is not pressured by his father anymore. She doesn't even feel sorry for the people in mourning, and manipulates them.
6. I predict that Elizabeth will escape from Snowden, and she will find some way to marry Teddy Cutting. Also, Henry and Diana will not live happily together, and Carolina's secret will be found out.
