1. Right now, the Goverment just demolished all the trees and shrubs in the backyard of Luke's family. Luke is the third child in his family-a crime at this time. There is a population problem on Earth, so families are limited to two kids and no pets. The Population police will take Luke away if he was caught. Luke was just denied the ability to look outside and eat at the dinner table.

2. I feel like this book is interesting, though a bit below my level. I like the sense of mystery in it, and feel like the author is foreshaddowing the effects of too much population and population control.

3. I have noticed rebellion as a theme so far. I see this because Luke's family is being rebellious by having a third child.

4. My favorite character is Luke. He is so innocent because he has never had contact with anyone besides his family and comes to conclusions easily and smartly.

5. My least favorite character is Mark because he is always being mean to Luke.

6. I think that next in the story, Luke may be discovered by one of the new neighbors or may find another third child in a new house.
