The Juvie Three
Gordon Korman
Realistic Fiction
Just Right
1. Right now in my book, Gecko, Terence, and Arjay are three juvenile delinquents who have just been given the chance of a lifetime: to escape from juvenile hall. They are presented with the option to live in a halfway house in New York City and if they stay out of trouble for a year, they are off the hook. They gradually learn to like each other and it turns out that Gecko and Arjay are just normal kids who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Terence however, is determined to return to his gangster ways and plans to meet up with a kid named DeAndre to rob a video game store. That night, while Terence is escaping from the halfway house, Arjay and Gecko find him and try to stop him from his old ways. Mr. Healy, the director of the program and the leader of the halfway house, tries to put Arjay and Terence back in the house and lock them in there. Terence shoves Arjay in to Mr. Healy on the fire escape and hits Mr. Healy three stories down on to a pile of trash cans. Gecko, being the getaway driver for his brother, intends to drive Mr. Healy to the hospital and leave him there as he is on the run from the law. Will he make it in time?
2. I like this book so far because it provides a lot of intense real life experiences from the criminals point of view, showing that sometimes people are forced into committing crimes just from being in that environment.
3. A them in this book so far is partnership or trust because usually when characters meet for the first time, Gordon Korman makes a good point about showing the development in trust and the maturity of a relationship as it grows stronger.
4. Arjay is my favorite character because Gordon Korman has developed this character so much faster than other characters and it doesn't look like his character is going to evolve too much throughout the story. He is definitely the most normal of all of the juvie three and is the only one the commit their crime by accident.
5. My least favorite character is Terence because he is sort of a poser and doesn't really believe in true friendship. He strives to be the best at every thing he does but almost exceedingly so. He always tries to act like he's all that but he really isn't considering he would sell the rest of the juvie three out for a couple of dollars.
6. I think that Mr. Healy is going to get better but he will lose his memory because they are definitely going to juvie if they get caught which creates a problem.
